We believe experience matters: your personal experience and our professional experience.

Natural Childbirth East Texas

Even though “healthy mom, healthy baby” is the MOST essential outcome, it’s not the ONLY outcome that matters. It does matter how you give birth. More specifically, it matters how you feel about how you give birth. Birth is the beginning, not only for the child, but for the mother as well.

Time and again we have seen that when a woman feels supported and empowered throughout her pregnancy and birth, that personal empowerment carries over into her mothering style as well. She becomes a leader of her family, seeking answers and directing care in so many other ways. She trusts herself. This is why your personal experience matters.

Every birth is unique. Our promise is this: you will be supported through every step, no matter what.

Our professional experience, spanning over a decade, means that you’ll get excellent care at every step of the journey. We believe that pregnancy and childbirth are normal, natural functions of life, not medical conditions to be treated. The medical background and experience at Cherished Birth means you have a caregiver equipped to address healthcare questions with an evaluative and qualitative approach.

We are committed to providing informed choice. That means we’ll come alongside you, answer your questions, and give you the information needed to help you make the decisions that best suit you and your family.

Professional midwifery…

…the modern practice of ancient wisdom

the midwife’s way

Most studies show that when a skilled birth attendant is present, out-of-hospital birth is safe for low risk pregnancies, and good results are achieved with low rates of interventions like labor induction, labor augmentation, and cesarean section.

A Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) is a knowledgeable and skilled practitioner who has met the standards for certification set by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and is qualified to provide the Midwives’ Model of Care.

As we adhere to the Midwives’ Model of Care, we will attend to your physical, psychological and social well-being. We will answer your questions and thoroughly explain things in familiar language.

A midwife is there for you, providing holistic health counseling, prenatal and postpartum care, and continuous hands-on assistance during birth. You’ll feel like you’re giving birth with your best friend present…only this friend has medical training and emergency equipment just in case!

With all the info and options, you’ll develop your ideal birth plan and give consent for the procedures we recommend. This allows you to not worry about what may happen to you, so you can focus on what your body is doing and how you are feeling. You can experience your empowered and natural birth!

Melēna Sandifer

Owner & CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL MIDWIFE, LICENSED MIDWIFE

After serving the East Texas area as a Licensed Paramedic for over 6 years, and then working as a Registered Nurse, the opportunity to apprentice with my personal midwife presented itself in 2011. I jumped at the chance!

I became a Certified Professional Midwife and a Licensed Midwife with the state of Texas in 2014 after completing all aspects of apprenticeship required by the North American Registry of Midwives.

I was honored to be the primary midwife of a busy practice for nearly 2 years, before opening Cherished Birth in 2016.

I believe that pregnancy and childbirth are normal, natural functions of life. This is a sacred time of growing families, both literally and figuratively.

I strive to offer my clients respectful, up-to-date, and evidence-based care. I am a firm believer in informed choice. It is my desire to offer current research and options, and come alongside my clients as they make choices that best suit their family’s needs.

As a wife and mom of three children, I trend toward holistic/alternative options for my own family and offer those recommendations for my clients. I am blessed and honored to serve each client, and truly believe God has called me to this work.

Sarah Friberg,

certified professional midwife, licensed midwife

I was first exposed to midwifery when I was 3 years old, when my mom chose a midwife and homebirth for her fifth pregnancy. I felt God’s call on my life to midwifery at the age of 17, at a medical missions’ conference. In 2005, I attended my niece’s homebirth with a local midwife, and felt God’s call again on my heart. I joined the Association of Texas Midwives Midwifery Training Program, and began my midwifery apprenticeship in April 2008 at a busy freestanding birth center here in East Texas. After completing all requirements for licensure by the North American Registry of Midwives, I became a Licensed Midwife by the state of Texas, and also became a Certified Professional Midwife, in 2011. I began my own home birth practice, and continued working for the birth center. I left the birth center in August of 2014, after giving birth to my first child. I still have my own home birth practice based out of Pittsburg, Texas, and am thrilled to be part of the Cherished Birth team! I believe that birth is a normal physiological process. Birth is not a disease or an illness that requires medical treatment, as long as the woman is healthy, and pregnancy remains low-risk. I also believe that in most cases, it requires little to no intervention. My goal is to provide evidenced based care, and share the best information with clients so that they can make informed decisions. I prefer a holistic approach to midwifery, and with my family.

Rachel Solly

midwife apprentice

I experienced the benefits of midwifery care 14 years ago with the birth of my second child. After that, I went on to have five more home births, including two water births!

The care I’ve received from midwives sparked a desire to see more women and families given the opportunity to take an active role in their health care, pregnancy and birth, so I became a certified doula.

As a doula, I help couples become empowered, informed, and supported through the entire birth experience. Becoming a midwife was the natural next step!

I’m honored to serve the Cherished Birth families as I study under the instruction of Melēna Sandifer to complete my midwife apprenticeship.

Midwifery Services Manager

Sharon Wilson

Office Manager

In 2001 I began work as an assistant at births at Childbirth Services where I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Thalia Hufton, CPM. As Childbirth Services expanded, I became the Office Manager and Administrative Assistant. Melēna Sandifer came on board in 2011 and we have been privileged to not only work together but become good friends.

I am happy to be working with Melēna at Cherished Birth in an office role, and look forward to meeting and greeting our wonderful clients and their families.

I am happily married (40 years this year!), have 3 grown children, and now also get to enjoy the wonderful role of Grammie to my adorable grandchildren.
